Basic SEO Strategies Efficient for Ranking Improvements

Note: this is my personal case study / experience I’ve worked on a specific project which I can’t mention. However we can call the project LOCAL SEO CASE STUDY.

OVERVIEW

SEO SuccessI’ve been doing case studies majority of my career as an SEO Specialist. So a little history that I want to share; before good results are usually occur after 6 consistent efforts and analysis. Which pretty average and good because somehow, I’ve hit the business objective of my client. (it’s kinda slow though).. So through the years of observing other sites, doing case studies, trial and error stuff I finally consolidated all efforts that works and filtered out what doesn’t (somehow big factor is my analysis skills have improved compare to how I see things before). So this year 2014 I’ve implemented my theory for LOCAL SEO Strategy for a specific LOCAL SEO Project (it’s a dental site) did the research and analysis saved before optimization metrics data, migrated research data and went through with my initial on-site optimization SOP. After the initial efforts I’ve generated an after optimization report to compare with the previous report. Guess what happen after two weeks…………. BOOM! Primary keyword ranking increased big time! (before #6 Local SERPS) current ranking for primary keyword #2 Local SERPS outranked 4 competitors locally.

PROBLEM: LOW LOCAL SEO RANKINGS SCORE

PHASE 1 – CASE STUDY TIMELINE

Analysis Think RightInitial SEO Research & Analysis

Start off the project phase one was all about research, analysis and on-site optimization. So initially it’s my SOP to conduct an initial research and analysis before anything else; just gathering metrics data from current SEO status as a result of their previous efforts. I recommend generating reports around the research to document before optimization data (prior for comparison analysis to determine improvements areas). It’s what I called going back doing the basics; so once I’ve done the research and analysis, now I know what’s the issues, what are the factors why the site isn’t successful organically. The objective here is to be able to see the ideal direction to move forward with in respect with on-site optimization strategy.

Research Data and Analysis Implementation

Since I’ve done all the research/analysis needed; now it’s time to implement all outlined strategies, keyword research, all research data needed to improve the site’s from it’s current SEO Status (objective: is to filter out all the bad stuff and consolidating all the right ones). So now we’re ready to optimize meta data for all the pages, configure CMS for optimum state that will allow the strategy built from analysis phase to be implement. Here are list that I initially target for on-site optimization improvements:

  • Google Analytics and Webmaster Tool Configuration
  • Permalinks Set
  • Taxonomy Optimization
  • Breadcrumbs Implementation (rich snippet)
  • Meta Data 100% optimized
  • Authorship Google+
  • Localization Signals like Google Maps Schema
  • Services Schema Implementation
  • Content Optimization (if from reseach/analysis highlights that current content optimization is weak)

If you think the site have improved optimization score generate site audit report & keyword rankings report. Compare metrics data from previous report to be able to determine improvement areas from on-site optimization efforts (ideally you should have a little improvements with rankings if you’re research data are right for the site’s online objective).

PHASE 2 – CASE STUDY TIMELINE

I remember way back two years ago… When Google’s LOCAL Algorithm (not sure what update) focus on looking at a local business citation profile and lessen the value of link building for LOCAL Business SEO Rankings. Doing link building for a local business will surely have an impact however when it comes with LOCAL SERPS Google scale out the business’s listing profile and that’s where the majority of the SEO Score for ranking locally.

So here’s a long list of Citation sites that you should get the business listed for a better SERPS performance in a local scale: (these lists is what I used when I did the business listings phase of the case study project) I haven’t included search engines submissions lists but on top of the lists below I added search engine submissions only US Based search engines. You can do this manually or you can use listing tools that will save you a lot of time. I have two tools that I recommend it’s https://www.whitespark.ca and http://yext.com.

Note: Make sure when you’re doing manual listings that you’re listing data are identically / standardize. Avoid having different listing data across two or more citation sites. (That’s why having a tool to do citations for you manage the consistency of you data across all sites)

Rankings = SuccessYou have to go through this list and check if your business/site fits the directory or not. There are some cases where a dental clinic site will be irrelevant to a food directory site (you know…). However, to make it easy for us or should I say for the whole SEO community moz.com have already analyzed each of the major listings sites and they filtered out which sites are ideal for each of the city in the US. Here: http://moz.com/learn/local/citations-by-city (Awesome Right???….lol) Thanks MOZ!….. =)

In case your facing a whole different scenario your dealing with global scale and not local, or perhaps you’re main objective is just to increase traffic focus on doing content driven link building with social media efforts in constant timeline to be able to scale down efforts over improvements made.

  • Guest Posting
  • Web 2.0 Content Marketing
  • Email Marketing
  • A/B testing and Goal Conversion Tracking/Analysis
  • Social Media Activities: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest and other curations sites.

The efforts laid out above have an impact towards rankings improvements at the same time improving branding and marketing reach.

My Conclusion

If the initial efforts have made some improvements when you reach phase 2 do another cycle until you’ll hit the objective of the site/business. Max timeline for improvements occurrence 4 months (If you’re analytical skills and understanding is in average we’ll in the first or second month improvements should occur). However give it 4 months of constant efforts and if still no improvements, I think you need to drop the project and find someone who can take the site/business to meet its online objective.

So keep on doing a cycle of these strategies, I’m sure your rankings will improve in time. Do not rush… One theory I’ve prove correctly through my years of study, analytical observation and research; “In SEO Consistency Is The Key” as long as your strategies and efforts are focus towards meeting the site’s/business’ objectives just keep on doing cycles of efforts.
